natural, efficient and economic purification of contaminated water bodies
Nature does the work, we supply the means

- FIA offers a safe and environmentally friendly solution to the pollution of lakes and water bodies caused by excess nutrients and heavy metals emanating from storm water drains and creeks draining into the water bodies.
- Vast quantities of water are wasted and natural water courses are damaged due to contamination from excess nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus and from heavy metals.
- Vegetation can provide a natural and environmentally friendly means of controlling these excess nutrients and pollutants.
- Bird netting is used for the first few months whilst the plants are vulnerable, then removed
Floating islands of vegetation – we call them Floating Biosphere Islands - on a support structure can significantly reduce nutrient loads:
- 600 m2 of island could absorb 1 tonne each of N and P nutrients per year.*
- A river section 2km long, 10 m wide could need no more than 3% of its surface covered with floating islands to achieve that effect.
* based on calculations from data published by various international sources (600 m2 is an island of just 30 X 20 m or about one residential building block in size)
